Youth AIDS Filipinas Alliance (YAFA) AIDS Watch: 61 HIV cases reported in August 2009

The Department of Health through its National Epidemiology Center reported 61 HIV cases for August 2009, a 49% increase compared to the same period last year. The total number of HIV infection for 2009 alone (January to August) accounts for 493 cases. This month's reported infections bring the total number of HIV cases in the Philippines to 4,082 since January 1984. Youth AIDS Filipinas Alliance (YAFA) AIDS Watch: 40 HIV cases diagnosed for June 2009

Report by the Department of Health on June 2009 HIV and AIDS Registry: In June 2009, there were 40 new HIV Ab sero positive individuals confirmed by the STD/AIDS Cooperative Central Laboratory (SACCL) and reported to the HIV and AIDS Registry. This was a 25% increase compared to the same period last year (n=32 in 2008). This brings the total for 2009 (January to June) to 362 cases. Most of the cases (88%) were males. Youth AIDS Filipinas Alliance (YAFA) AIDS WATCH: 85 HIV positive cases reported for May 2009; young Filipinos age 20-24 accounts for 29% of the infections

For the month of May 2009, there were 85 HIV Ab seropositive cases reported to the Department of Health. This is the highest number of HIV positive cases reported withinin a month in the history of HIV & AIDS in the Philippines. Of the 85 HIV cases, 29% or 25 persons are young people age 20-24. Majority of the cases were from the National Capital Region, the Metropolitan Manila.
